TikTok Research API: Who Can Use It, and What Else to Use
The official TikTok Research API is for academic and not-for-profit researchers only. Here is what it gives them, read from TikTok's docs, and what everyone else can use instead.
TL;DR
- Who it is for: the TikTok Research API is for researchers at eligible academic and not-for-profit organisations in the US, EEA, UK, Canada and Switzerland (plus a Brazil youth-safety track). TikTok's FAQ answers creators, advertisers and commercial users with one word: "No."
- What you get if approved: public videos, comments, user profiles, follower and following lists, capped at 1,000 requests and 100,000 records a day, 100 records per request, and 30 days of video per query.
- What the terms require: refresh your data at least every 30 days, delete anything TikTok no longer serves, share nothing with third parties, and send TikTok a copy of any publication 7 days before it goes out.
- The commercial routes: consent-based APIs (the creator logs in), scrapers (about $2 per 1,000 profiles, but you need the handles), or an index you can search by filters, like the Tokfluence API at $9.80 per 1,000 profiles.
- The caveat: we sell one of those alternatives. Everything about TikTok's API below comes from TikTok's own developer pages, read on 16 October 2026, and is linked so you can check it.
If you are searching for the TikTok Research API, you are probably one of two people. A researcher who wants to know whether it is worth the application, or a developer, marketer or founder who has just found out that it might not be open to you.
This page answers both. First, what the official Research API gives you, read from TikTok's own developer docs. Then what to use instead when you are not eligible, with prices compared per 1,000 profiles and the maths shown.
What is the TikTok Research API?
The TikTok Research API is TikTok's official, application-only API that gives approved academic and not-for-profit researchers access to public TikTok data for non-commercial research. It covers public accounts, videos and comments, and is run through the TikTok for Developers portal (Research API product page).
It is not the same thing as TikTok's other developer products. The Display API and Login Kit only return the profile and videos of a user who has logged in and authorised your app, with no search (Display API overview). The TikTok for Business APIs are about running ads. The Research API is the only official way to query public TikTok content you do not own, and that is exactly why access is restricted.
Who can get access to the TikTok Research API?
Only researchers affiliated with an eligible organisation in an eligible region, working independently of commercial interests. TikTok's product page lists three groups (Research API, checked 16 October 2026):
| Group | Who qualifies |
|---|---|
| Academic researchers | Academic institutions in the US, EEA, UK, Canada or Switzerland |
| EU not-for-profit researchers | "Not-for-profit and/or independent research" institutions, organisations, associations or bodies in the EU (TikTok describes this as a beta in select regions) |
| Brazil youth-safety track | Brazilian academic institutions or nonprofits studying online youth safety |
Applicants must also be "independent of commercial interests and able to conduct research on a not-for-profit or non-commercial basis" (same page).
The process has three steps: create a TikTok for Developers account with a professional email address, submit an application with your organisation and research details, and wait. TikTok says you can "typically expect to hear back from us within 4 weeks of submission".
Can a brand, agency or startup apply? No. TikTok's FAQ puts it in so many words: "I am a creator, advertiser, or commercial user. Am I eligible for access to the Research Tools? No." (Research Tools FAQ).
What data does the TikTok Research API return?
Public videos and their comments, user profiles, follower and following lists, and liked, pinned and reposted videos, plus EU TikTok Shop data (Research API). Comments come from a separate endpoint, up to 100 per request (query video comments spec). The two endpoints most people care about:
Videos. A video query returns up to 23 fields, including view_count, like_count, comment_count, share_count, hashtag_names, region_code, video_duration, username and voice_to_text (query videos spec). Two limits matter for planning: "The end_date must be no more than 30 days after the start_date", and each request returns at most 100 videos.
User info. You send a username and get back display_name, bio_description, avatar_url, is_verified, follower_count, following_count, likes_count, video_count and bio_url (query user info spec).
Notice what is not there. User info takes a username you already have: there is no endpoint that finds creators by follower range, engagement or country. And there is no contact email field. For academic work on content and behaviour, that is fine. For finding creators to work with, it is the wrong tool even before eligibility comes into it.
What are the TikTok Research API rate limits?
1,000 requests a day and 100,000 records a day for the standard endpoints, with 100 records per request. From TikTok's FAQ (Research Tools FAQ, checked 16 October 2026):
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Requests per day (standard endpoints) | 1,000 |
| Records per day (standard endpoints) | 100,000 |
| Records per request | 100 |
| Followers / following lists | Up to 20,000 calls and 2 million records per day |
| Video query window | 30 days between start and end date |
| Data lag | Video data "can take up to 10 days to update"; new videos "up to 48 hours" to become searchable |
| Virtual Compute Environment, test stage | Up to 5,000 records per day |
At full use, 100,000 records a day is a lot for a single study. The binding limit is usually the 30-day query window: a year of videos on one topic means at least 13 separate date-ranged queries.
What do the Research API terms require?
Non-commercial use only, a 30-day refresh-and-delete cycle, no sharing with third parties, and a copy of any publication sent to TikTok in advance. The relevant clauses of the Research Tools Terms of Service:
- No commercial use. You may not use the tools "for any commercial or unauthorized purpose, including beyond the scope of the approved Research" (section III).
- Refresh and delete. You must "regularly refresh TikTok Research Data at least every thirty (30) days, and delete data that is not available from the TikTok Research Tools at the time of each refresh" (section III.3). So if a creator deletes a video, it has to leave your dataset too.
- No onward sharing. You agree "not to disclose, copy, reproduce, share, sell, or otherwise transfer to any third party any TikTok Research Data" (section IV).
- Advance copy of publications. You must give TikTok a copy of any publication containing your findings "at least seven (7) days before publication" (section III.3).
Each of these is reasonable for a study. Together they rule out the things a commercial user would want to build: a creator database, a CRM, a client report, a product feature.
What are the commercial alternatives to the TikTok Research API?
Three: consent-based APIs, scrapers, and searchable creator indexes. They return different things, so only compare prices within a group.
| Option | Data source | Finds new creators? | Price, per 1,000 profiles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokfluence API | Searchable index | Yes, by followers, engagement, country, hashtags, has email | $49 / month: $9.80 ($49 / 5,000 x 1,000) |
| TikTok Research API | Official | No, lookup only | Not sold: academic and not-for-profit only |
| TikTok Display API / Login Kit | Official, creator logs in | No | Not published |
| Phyllo | Creator consent, plus public APIs | Yes, via public APIs | Quote only (pricing) |
| ScrapeCreators | Scraper, live | User search, no filters | $47 one-off: $1.88 ($47 / 25,000 x 1,000) |
| EnsembleData | Scraper, live | Text search only | $100 / month: $2.22 ($100 / 45,000 x 1,000) |
| Apify, clockworks actors | Scraper, live | Keyword and hashtag only | $5 free usage, then $19 / month: $2 to $3 ($0.002 to $0.003 x 1,000) |
TikTok figures read from developers.tiktok.com on 16 October 2026. Third-party prices from each vendor's own pricing page on 14 October 2026, as detailed in our influencer marketing API comparison. Tokfluence prices from /pricing. Every per-1,000 figure assumes you use the whole allowance.
Consent-based APIs are the closest thing to the official API with commercial terms. The creator logs in through an OAuth flow and authorises your app, so you get first-party numbers, including some that are not public. The catch is that you only get creators who opt in. That fits a creator marketplace or a payments tool, and it is why we wrote a separate Phyllo comparison.
Scrapers are the cheapest per profile, about $2 per 1,000, because they skip the expensive part: they fetch a page you point them at and keep nothing searchable. If you already have a list of handles and want fresh stats, use one. We broke down one marketplace's costs in Apify pricing explained.
Indexes are the only group that answers "find me UK skincare creators with 10,000 to 50,000 followers and a public email". The vendor has already collected and structured the profiles, so you search by filters instead of crawling.
How does the Tokfluence API compare with the Research API?
Tokfluence is a commercial API that anyone can sign up for, built for finding creators; the Research API is an academic tool built for studying content. Side by side:
| TikTok Research API | Tokfluence API | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Approved academic and not-for-profit researchers | Anyone, self-serve |
| Commercial use | Prohibited | Allowed |
| Time to first request | Typically up to 4 weeks for review | Minutes, after signup |
| Search creators by filters | No | Yes: follower range, engagement rate, country, hashtags, mentions, verified, has email |
| Contact details | No email field | Shown where creators publish them, with a has_email filter |
| Rate limit | 1,000 requests / day | 1,200 requests / minute per key (docs) |
| Official TikTok product | Yes | No. Built from public TikTok pages, not affiliated with TikTok |
| Fill gaps on demand | No | Yes, live TikTok crawl through our MCP server (Agency plan) |
On price: the API-only Growth plan is $49 a month for 5,000 profile credits, and one credit is one profile with contact details, so $49 / 5,000 = $0.0098 per profile, or $9.80 per 1,000. The API-only Pro plan is $99 for 10,000 ($9.90 per 1,000). If you also want the search app and the MCP server, the Agency plan is $199 for 20,000 credits shared between all three, which works out at $199 / 20,000 x 1,000 = $9.95 per 1,000 (pricing). What you are really buying is volume: thousands of searches and exports a month at a flat price. And if you would rather not run searches at all, our Discovery Service ($499 a month, 100,000 credits) has our team build hand-filtered lists for you.
The difference that matters most: live crawling on demand. An index can only return creators it already holds, and ours, like every index, is not all of TikTok. When a niche is thin, our MCP server can start a live TikTok crawl straight from the chat in Cursor or another AI assistant, for 250 credits. The new creators become searchable a few hours later, through the app, the API and the MCP alike (MCP docs). The MCP server comes with the Agency plan.
Every API call is logged per key with its credit cost, so spend can be checked against your own logs.
How do you search TikTok creators with the Tokfluence API?
Get an API key, then call GET /v1/creators/search with your filters. Four steps:
- Pick a plan. API-only from $49 a month on the TikTok API page, or Agency at $199 if you want the app and MCP server too.
- Create a key in the developer dashboard. Keys start with
tkf_live_and go in theAuthorizationheader (authentication). - Search. For example, US fitness creators with 10,000 to 50,000 followers and a public email:
curl "https://developers.tokfluence.com/v1/creators/search?query=fitness&min_followers=10000&max_followers=50000®ions[]=US&has_email=true&per_page=100" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKFLUENCE_API_KEY"
- Go deeper on the shortlist.
GET /v1/creators/:id/postsfetches a creator's recent posts live, which is how you check current performance before reaching out (creators reference).
Not for you if: you need deep Instagram audience data (we are TikTok-first and do not search Instagram), or you need every record refreshed recently. Our own docs say that for creators with 1,000 to 10,000 followers, the median one was last analysed about a year ago (FAQ). You can filter with analyzed_within_days or pull live posts per creator, but if you already have the handles and want today's numbers, a scraper is fresher.
Which should you use?
If you are an eligible academic or not-for-profit researcher, apply for the Research API. It is the only official, documented source of public TikTok data, and peer reviewers will trust it more than anything on this page. Budget up to four weeks for approval and plan your queries around the 30-day window.
If you are not eligible, pick by one question: do you already know which creators you need?
- No, you need to find them. Use an index. The Tokfluence TikTok API starts at $49 a month for 5,000 profiles, and on the Agency plan it can crawl TikTok live when a niche is thin.
- Yes, you have the handles. Use a scraper, at about $2 per 1,000 profiles.
- Yes, and they will log in to your app. Use a consent-based API like Phyllo, or TikTok's own Login Kit for a single platform.
